How 90's Trends Have an Impact on Today's Fashion

If you grew up in the 90’s, you may remember a lot of the bizarre, yet extraordinary fashion trends. If not, allow me to remind you of the most memorable trends; butterfly clips, shag bands, baggy jeans, cargo trousers, velvet, studded belts and denim everything. These are just some of the unforgettable trends, there are many more that have yet to be mentioned. Some of the 90’s trends have even made a comeback this year. Take a look at this list!
Velvet

This one is obvious. Velvet was popular in the 90’s, it’s extremely trendy today, and it’s easy to see why. The soft, versatile fabric can be worn on tons of different occasions like going out for dinner, going shopping, clubbing and even for casual wear. It’s not exactly clear who made velvet popular in the 90’s, but celebrities such as Courtney Cox, Sandra Bullock and the ladies from Clueless may have had an impact on the trend.
Chokers

Chokers were popular during the 90’s and early 2000’s. After that they disappeared, but just recently made a huge comeback. Now they come in different styles, colours and materials. Love them or hate them, chokers have become a huge trend, and all kinds of celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande have been spotted wearing them. I don’t believe we’ll ever see the last of them, as they keep evolving each year.
Dungarees (overalls)

Dungarees were a thing in the 90’s, and have recently come back to clothing stores such as H&M, Primark, New Look, River Island and many more. The difference is, they were mostly worn by children in the 90’s, while today they are sold for and worn by adults. On the 20thcentury they were worn by construction workers, factory workers, soldiers, farmers and railroad workers. Today, they are worn as a fashion statement, and supermodels Miranda Kerr, Ashley Graham and Rosie Huntington-Whitley are helping the trend grow.
Mom Jeans

The loose, comfy denim jeans are back. Countless of celebrities have been seen wearing these, increasing the popularity of the “mom jeans”. They were first worn in the 80’s, but were extremely fashionable during the 90’s. Today, young modern women are wearing them for extra comfort and to look stylish. A lot of the mom jeans today are ripped, which was also a trend in the 90’s. Kurt Cobain, as well as others rock musicians, was notorious for wearing ripped jeans in the early 1990’s.
Tartan/Flannel shirts

During the 90’s decade, grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam wore flannel shirts, which helped popularize the trend. Although they were mostly worn by punk, rock, grunge musicians and their fans in the 90’s, today plaid flannel shirts are worn by all sorts of people. You will also find tartan blankets, bed sheets and sleepwear in stores, thanks to millennials’ obsession with plaid patterns.
So, there you have it. The 90’s trends which not everyone was a fan of then, are being worn by heaps of people today. Which 90’s trend would you like to see come back today?
