Over the years, we have seen beauty trends come and go, and we’ve lived through the years where heavy bottom eyeliner and over-plucked eyebrows were at thing. Yikes!
Fortunately, the new beauty trends are much more bearable, and I’m proud to say that I’ve followed some of the awesome trends of 2017, like contouring and over-lining lips. However, there were also some beauty trends that were either questionable, weird or just horrendous. As there aren’t enough beauty trends yet to review in 2018, here is my honest review of beauty trends from 2017.
First off, feather eyebrows. I know what you’re thinking, and no, nobody is gluing feathers to their eyebrows. Girls were brushing their eyebrows in 2017 to resemble feathers, which is almost as ridiculous. Why anyone would want to ruin their lovely thick brows to look like an angry bird is beyond me. I would rather bleach my eyebrows, than look like I have two black silverfish on my brow lines. Let’s leave feather brows in 2017.
Next up, bright eyeshadow. Eyeshadow colours like orange, pink, red, and yellow were trendy in 2017, and are still just as trendy now. Actress Vanessa Hudgens wore a red eyeshadow look at the 2017 VMAs, while Margot Robbie somehow rocked yellow eyeshadow at the London premiere of Goodbye Christopher Robin. While I’ve always rocked dark colours, I did decide to step out of my comfort zone, and try warm tone colours. Red, orange, and pink have become my favourite eyeshadow colours, and are now part of my go-to look. I’m all for this trend, but apart from Margot Robbie, I don’t think anyone else could look amazing with bright yellow eyeshadow. Sorry, ladies!
You know what’s worse than feather brows? Squiggly eyebrows. What’s really sad, is that one of my favourite beauty gurus, Promise Tamang, is the person who started this trend. This awful eyebrow trend later became a challenge, where people would create a full face of squiggly eyebrows, making their lips, eyeliner, eyebrows and eyeshadow squiggly. Luckily, this squiggly nightmare trend has vanished, and we won’t be forced to see it on Instagram anymore. It’s like we’ve ran out of beauty trends, so we’re coming up with the strangest trends that involve turning your eyebrows into worms and sperm cells. So disappointed.
Next beauty trend I didn’t forget is the fake freckles look. Growing up, I remember that kids with freckles were picked on, but in 2017, the same people that hated freckles were drawing fake freckles on their cheeks with makeup. It reminds me of when I was made fun of for having thick, bushy eyebrows as a kid, and now every woman wants thick, full eyebrows. I’ve always found freckles adorable, but I don’t support this trend, simply because it sucks for people who were bullied for having freckles. I’m just waiting for fine lines to become a beauty trend.
Finally, the lollipop lips. It’s a weird beauty trend that MAC Cosmetics started, when they made their models wear smudged lipsticks on the outside of their lips, making it appear as if they’ve sucked on a lollipop. A lot of people seem to hate this trend, saying that it looks like snogging rash on your lips, but for some odd reason I really like the lollipop lips look. Maybe I find it cute, because it reminds me of when I was 5, and used to smear my mum’s lipstick all over my mouth. I really wish this trend lasted longer, as I never got to try it. Well, may the year 2018 bring us even better beauty trends.
