Sophie Wright, 22, is a second-year Fashion Design student in Middlesex University. To get a better understanding of why she chose to do Fashion, I did a little interview with her. I found out how passionate she was about it, who her fashion icon is, who her favourite fashion designer is, and some interesting facts about herself.
Q: Why did you choose to do Fashion Design?
A: I’ve been passionate about fashion for a long time. Since I was about 12 I used to follow all the latest fashion trends, read fashion magazines, and even watch fashion shows on TV. Whenever I came home from secondary school, I used to design cute sweaters and handbags using my mum’s sewing machine. I think when I was about 14 I knew that I wanted to do Fashion in the future and become a successful fashion designer, that’s why I chose this course.
Q: What does fashion mean to you?
A: It means a lot to me. I can’t leave the house without wearing something stylish, and I feel like even when I’m going to the airport or a corner shop near my house I have to wear something nice and presentable. My outfits and style define who I am as a person, and when I look at people the first thing I notice about them is their clothes. I can tell a lot about a person by looking at the way they’re dressed, so I feel like fashion helps me make friends.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about studying Fashion?
A: Meeting people with similar interests as me, learning about the history of fashion, fashion drawing and of course garment making. I find most things about this course really interesting, and I know it will help me get one step closer to achieving my dreams of becoming a fashion designer.
Q: What has been your most challenging experience since starting this course?
A: Probably having to do a lot of research and reading in some modules, but I’m getting used to it. Coming up with new ideas for garments every week is also a little tricky, however it’s expected if you want to become a fashion designer.
Q: How would you describe your style in three words?
A: Fun, bold and edgy!
Q: Who’s your fashion icon?
A: Cara Delevingne. Not when she’s modelling, but when she’s out and about wearing edgy or tomboyish outfits. I love her street style, and I admire the way she takes risks with everything she wears. At the same time, I also love classy fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, but my style is mostly similar to Cara’s.
Q: Finally, who’s your favourite fashion designer and why?
A: My favourite fashion designer and fashion brand is definitely Michael Kors. I own four of his bags, I’m currently wearing one of them, and I also own a lot of Michael Kors clothing. I just don’t think any of my outfits are complete without a Michael Kors bag. Everything he designs for women is so sleek, feminine, minimal and classic. I love how at only five years old he redesigned his mother’s wedding dress, which just shows how he’s always had passion for fashion. Most importantly I really like how his very high quality bags are actually affordable compared to other big brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton. He has inspired me to do fashion, and I hope to become as big as him one day.
