My Very Honest Review of 2017 Fashion

Every year social media is blessing us with the latest fashion trends. Going on Instagram, and looking at what millennials are wearing is the perfect way to know what kind of clothing is currently popular. At least for me. I tried my best to follow the latest fashion trends in 2017. However, some trends were so horrendous that I didn’t bother to try them out. Here’s my review of five of the most popular fashion trends of 2017. Enjoy!

First thing’s first: velvet. Although velvet has been around for centuries, the structured fabric was extremely popular in 2016 and 2017. It’s still very popular, as I always see crushed velvet shoes, dresses, shirts and skirts in fashion stores. I never paid attention to this beautiful, soft fabric until last year when I saw a huge amount of women wearing velvet dresses to parties. I decided to buy a red strappy velvet vest from H&M to try it for myself, and I’ve been in love with it since then. I love wearing it with a white t-shirt underneath, as I’ve seen models wear it that way. I sincerely hope this trend never dies.

Next up, the bralette. I personally don’t see the appeal with bralettes. They’re basically bras with cuter designs, but for some reason people are obsessed with these. I for one don’t like them, find them overrated, and think they should be banished. People are going around wearing these as tops which I find very unattractive. They wouldn’t look that bad underneath a nice low-cut black dress, but to wear them in public with no layers is a little bit… unbearable.
Now let’s talk about the eighties style. The 80’s look is making a comeback. I’ve always admired 80’s fashion (not the hair!) and I felt extremely confident wearing double denim last year. I remember watching Stranger Things which is based in the 80’s, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the female characters’ 80’s looks. I even attempted to recreate some of the looks the next month, so it’s safe to say I’m in love with this trend.

Next thing I certainly didn’t forget is the kitten heels. Oh God, why? They’re absolutely hideous. I get it, small stiletto heels are much easier to walk in than high heels, but for the love of God, can we ban these things? They don’t deserve to be categorised as heels, it’s an insult to regular heels. So far, I haven’t seen anyone in 2018 wearing kitten heels, and I hope it stays that way.

Finally, bright colours. Wearing bright colours like red, blue, yellow, and green was very popular in summer of 2017. I think bright colours look beautiful on most people, but I gave it a pass. I have worn very bright coloured shirts, jeans and jackets in the past, but my friends would tease me every time I was dressed in bright colours from head to toe. I came to the conclusion that my facial features along with my skin tone aren’t made for bright colours, which is perfectly fine as I prefer darker colours anyway.
Well, that was my review of five fashion trends from last year. I hope I didn’t miss your favourite ones. I also hope that we can all agree to leave kitten heels in 2017. Please.
